Lusaji Mwaikenda’s decisive second-half header propelled Azam FC to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Rayon Sports on Saturday, August 3, in a friendly clash at the packed Kigali Pele Stadium. The game was a highlight of the annual “Rayon Day” festivities, where the club unveiled new players, partners, and kits for the upcoming season.

Fans filled the stadium almost two hours before kickoff, eagerly anticipating the squad announcements for the 2024/25 season. A heartwarming moment came when veteran Haruna Niyonzima received an emotional welcome, marking his return to the club after 17 years. Kevin Muhire was officially named club captain for the new season by President Jean Fidele Uwayezu.

Rayon Sports dominated the early exchanges, with Aruna Musa Madjaliwa orchestrating play from midfield. However, Azam’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Mustafa making crucial saves. Despite several opportunities for both sides, the first half ended in a goalless draw.

Azam emerged stronger in the second half, pressing Rayon into their half. Though Gibril Sillah’s early goal was ruled offside, Azam’s persistence paid off in the 53rd minute. Mwaikenda capitalized on a defensive lapse, heading home a perfect cross to break the deadlock.

Rayon fought back valiantly, with Junior Elenga’s powerful drive drawing applause-worthy saves from Mustafa. The closing minutes saw end-to-end action, but Azam’s resolute defense held firm.

The final whistle signaled Azam’s victory, extending Rayon’s winless streak on their special day to three years. Despite the loss, the “Rayon Day” celebrations continued with vibrant performances by artists like Platini, Sherrie Silver, and DJ Brianne, keeping fans entertained until late in the evening.
