USMNT star Gio Reyna is being tipped to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer and could link up with Mason Greenwood at Marseille.

  • Reyna deemed surplus to requirements at Dortmund
  • Expected to move on in the summer
  • Marseille could reignite interest in USMNT star

Reyna’s time at Dortmund could be set to end this summer after five years with the Bundesliga side. The USMNT star has “no future” at the club, with Julian Brandt and talented youngster Kjell Watjen now above him in the pecking order, as reported by Sky Sports Germany’s Patrick Berger. Dortmund are also keen to bring in Rayan Cherki from Lyon which would further limit Reyna’s opportunities. A move to Marseille is a potential option, with the Ligue 1 side having been previously interested in landing the 21-year-old.

Reyna only made one Bundesliga start for Dortmund last season and was shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest in January. However, the youngster failed to make any impression in the Premier League and Dortmund are keen to offload him permanently. Marseille were interested in Reyna before he joined Forest and may be willing to reignite their interest. The Ligue 1 side have already made a splash in the transfer market this summer by bringing in Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth €31.6 million (£27m/$34m).

Reyna has spoken about his future plans and made it clear he wants regular game time next season. He told The Athletic in June: “I just want to go somewhere that is at the highest possible level, but still play an important role, get consistent minutes and be an important player for any team, whether it’s at Dortmund or somewhere else. I’m just looking for the right fit for me, playing at a high level and a club that wants me — where I feel valued.”

Reyna has not travelled with the Dortmund squad for their pre-season tour of Asia but is due to link up with the club in Japan on July 22 following his Copa America exploits with the USMNT. A summer move for the American does now look to be on the cards, but it still remains to be seen where Reyna will play his football in the 2024-25 campaign.
